
Michael Simpson, MD
Dr. Michael Simpson joined Medical Center East/St. Vincent's East in 1988 and founded Birmingham Heart Clinic in 1994.
Originally from Gainesville, Georgia, Dr. Simpson graduated from Georgia Southern University and received his medical degree from the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta. While in medical school, he was president of his junior and senior classes and received the Dr. Walter L. Shepard Achievement Award for Excellence. Dr. Simpson completed his internal medicine internship and residency, as well as his fellowship in cardiology, at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. He later opened a cardiology practice in LaGrange, Georgia, where he served as Chief of the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory. When he returned to Birmingham, he worked at Carraway Hospital and served as Director of Cardiology at Norwood Clinic.
Dr. Simpson returned to Medical Center East/St. Vincent's East, and in his time there, he worked as Chairman of the Cardiovascular Department, served on the Board of Directors, and was honored with the Outstanding Teacher Award by the family practice residents.
Dr. Simpson is board certified in internal medicine and cardiology. He serves as the Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine and Cardiology at the University of Alabama Medical Center in Birmingham. Dr. Simpson has also been repeatedly named to "Birmingham's Best Doctors" and "America's Top Cardiologists." He has been an investigator of numerous research trials involving carotid artery stenting, myocardial infarction and various cardiac drugs and devices.
Dr. Simpson has three children. He and his wife, Elizabeth, traveled to China in 2005 where they adopted a baby girl. Dr. Simpson enjoys sports, music, humor and spending time on his farm in St. Clair County.
